The Faculty is comprised of Geography, History, Modern Studies and Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies. We aim to ensure that all of our pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they will need if they are to flourish in life, learning and work, now and in the future.
Subjects/Courses offered BGE (S1 – S2)
In S1 and S2 pupils study Social Subjects – this is a course which integrates Geography, History, Modern Studies and RMPS and equips pupils with valuable skills. These skills include, for example, map skills, being able to debate, work effectively with others, evaluate evidence, research, make informed conclusions and think critically. Literacy, numeracy and health and well-being are all intertwined with the Social Subjects content and skills through a wealth of learning activities and interesting topics.
BGE (S3)
In S3 pupils are able to personalise their learning in Social Subjects by choosing to take Social Subjects with Geography, Social Subjects with History, Social Subjects with Modern Studies or Social Subjects with Scottish Studies. In addition to this they have a core period each week of RMPS. All pupils will be taught transferable skills which build upon those developed in S1 and S2 and will help prepare them for the senior phase and in particular the production of an Added Value Unit and Assignment.
Senior Phase
Pupils in S4, 5 and 6 are following National Qualifications Courses (National 3, National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher). In all of the courses offered within the faculty, pupils are encouraged to further build on their collaborative and independent learning, appropriate and effective use of technology, and develop their skills of analysis and evaluation of sources.

About Us
The Social Subjects Faculty is committed to promoting the ethos of the School; a community that helps pupils develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in school and beyond. As such we provide a range of courses and learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. Pupils in the Faculty benefit from a range of excursions ranging from a visit to the Scottish Parliament to carrying out Geography fieldwork at Burn O’Vat. Pupils also enjoy and learn from visits by Geobus and living history performers. Our courses are designed to allow pupils to progress in their learning during their time with us and we offer Study Support to help all to achieve their full potential.
